What makes a portable charcoal grill portable?
Many times we like to use a portable charcoal grill when we go camping, tailgating, to the beach, on vacation and of course the backyard or patio. The need for having a portable charcoal grill is fairly great and sometimes people are confused the word ‘portable’. So what does portable really mean?
According to the dictionary being portable means that a specific unit easily transportable and performs most of the functions of a similar stationary unit. And that that pretty much sums up what most people want from a portable charcoal grill. Most portable charcoal grills fit my earlier description as well. Easily transported from one place to another, but that is not all there is to a charcoal grill that is portable.
There are many charcoal grills to choose from. But to get the most for you money , the portable charcoal grill has to perform all the grilling functions, it has be well constructed and last a long time, and it needs to be easily transported when carrying by hand and riding in the car trunk or truck bed. Those are the features you need to keep in mind when buying a portable charcoal grill.
Perform All Grilling Functions
I think a portable charcoal grill should be able to perform all of the functions of it’s counter part. The portable grill should be able to grill your food of course, but is should also be able to steam food, cook with indirect heat, cook barbecue style, and have adjustable heat levels. No matter where I go and use a portable charcoal grill I want one that will perform at the level as my large stationary grill.
Long Lasting
A portable charcoal grill should last a long time, years and years. For a charcoal grill to last that length of time it must be made of quality materials and be well constructed. All long lasting stationary charcoal grills are built from stainless steel and riveted with stainless steel rivets and I want that in a portable grill as well.
A Complete Portable Charcoal Grill
A complete portable charcoal grill should not be lacking anything. It will have a charcoal ash pan, a drip pan, adjustable air vents on top and near the bottom. A portable charcoal grill should not weigh more than 45 pounds with a built in lid and handles.
My Perfect Portable Charcoal Grill
The list below defines what I look for in a portable charcoal grill,
- Easily transportable by weighing in under 45 pounds and firmly attached handles to grasp the grill
- 100% stainless steel construction, no sheet metal that will rust, absolutely no plastic
- Good design with hinged hood, attached handles, attached legs, I want it sturdy
- Perform every cooking function of a large stationary grill
- Large grilling surface of 250 square inches or more
- Built in ash pan, drip pan and air vents
